Our Conviction
Inside the halls of Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple, Microsoft, and dozens of other technology companies, a quiet movement has been growing. The people who build, design, and ship the software have come to believe that the code they create should belong to everyone.
We are designers, engineers, product managers, and technologists who have spent our careers building products used by billions. We have seen firsthand how proprietary software creates walls where bridges should exist. We believe the tools of the digital age should be as free as the ideas that inspire them.
The Free Code Collective builds, maintains, and releases software to the world—no licensing fees, no vendor lock-in, no strings attached. We write code on nights and weekends, during hackathons and sabbaticals, and increasingly as part of our day jobs as our employers recognize the power of open contribution.
“The best software is built in the open, by people who care more about impact than profit.”
Our members have contributed to operating systems, programming languages, web frameworks, AI libraries, and critical infrastructure that powers the modern internet. We do this not for recognition, but because we believe access to technology is a fundamental right.
Principles of the Collective
Code Is a Public Good
Software that shapes society should be inspectable, modifiable, and free for all to use.
Transparency Over Secrecy
Open development builds trust. We work in public repositories, with open issue trackers and honest roadmaps.
Community Over Corporation
The best ideas emerge from collaboration across borders, companies, and backgrounds.
Access Is a Right
No one should be priced out of the tools they need to learn, create, or participate in the digital world.
